Pride of mom and dad, with his sweater tucked in
The things they never tell you - withered fruit from the family tree
Try to hide and sealed inside

Mother's mom, she had a way with every sort of thing
From talking to the animals
To makig nightbirds sing
Purple dress, horn rimmed glasses
China on the sill
She's walk outside and gesture wide
And the wind would stop dead still

I got into Grandmother's things and found an
Old book, and a lavender candle
Gem stones, a big silver star and then a
Serpentine knife, with a filligree handle

One day she didn't wake up, a kettle on the stove
Went off with no one there to even see her from the grove
At the end of the day, when the family went away
Something glinted in the hall and shone a light upon the way
I opened the old book and flipped through every withered page
Filled with funny writing from a long forgotten age
The daylight turned to night, the moon it turned to red
And suddenly I could read what all those pages said
